Table-Flipping Arcade Game

Table Flipping Arcade Game

In Japanese, people often talk about flipping over a table in anger — “chabudai gaeshi” or “upending the tea table” is seen throughout popular culture in Japan. Of course, when some people in Japan get totally pissed off, they might actually flip over the tea table.
Japanese arcade game Cho Chabudai Gaeshi is a score attack game that lets players pound a soft table for combos and then upend it for the finishing move. Settings include a host club, a wedding party, an office and a Japanese style living room. So for example, in the living room stage, players bang on the table as their family complains more and more and finally flips over the table.
Its one of the more bizarre arcade games I’ve seen and I cant wait to play it!

Plot:
“A paraplegic ex-marine war veteran (Sam Worthington) is unwillingly sent to establish a human settlement on the distant planet of Pandora, only to find himself battling humankind alongside the planet’s indigenous Na’vi race in this ambitious, digital 3-D sci-fi epic from Academy Award-winning Titanic director James Cameron.”

Quite possibly I may spontaneously combust in anticipation for this film. Apparently it’s going to come out in the Imax cinema. Fuck Toy Story, go see this.

Obscura Cuelight Pool TableThis pool table by gadget company, Obscura tries to make the experience of playing pool that much cooler with the addition of projected visuals onto the table top. It uses sensors and motion detectors with an overhead projector to create images on your table. While balls reveal an image hidden underneath, the system can also be configured to trail flames behind the balls, or even project a pool of water on the table that creates ripples as the balls strike the side rails. The system costs around $80,000 (pool table not included!!)…wtf

Michael Lau InterviewVinyl Pulse recently travelled to Hong Kong, where they had the chance to ask toy-legend, Michael Lau a couple questions in the run up to his major 10th Anniversary toy/book releases. You can read their interview HERE. It’s amazing to think that this art-toy phenomenon has lasted a decade now and was spawned from Hong Kong all those years ago. (Also makes me feel a lil older too!) I still cant shake the toy collecting bug…..

Tri.on is a remote controlled robot concept specially designed to be used by the fire brigades or disaster control unit. The main inspiration of this concept came from the drive of generating something that can substitute a human being under tremendously dangerous conditions. Tri.on robot features four wheel shaped rolling tires, each with 3 inner wheels to make the tires roll, allowing the robot to run over any sorts of uneven surfaces such as stairs. It has two hands that can move in any direction and two holders in the end of the hands that provides strong grip when picking up an object.

Communication Dedication: 15 Amazing Graphic Designers

What is it that makes a truly effective piece of graphic design? Is it just the skill that allows an artist to balance shape, color, texture, typography, photography and negative space to send a message – or is there a bit of magic to it? Creative talent is a tricky and elusive thing for most of the population, but some lucky people have it in spades.

These 15 graphic designers have managed to create work that stands out in a crowded field, using a diverse array of techniques, programs and materials.

Joshua Davis

Communication Dedication: 15 Amazing Graphic Designers

Joshua Davis is one of the most influential talents in the history of graphic design, with an incredibly vast portfolio of work that has made a deep impression upon many other graphic artists worldwide. Davis, who is now a professor at New York’s School of Visual Arts, pioneered a type of graphic design that utilizes Flash-based programs that he created himself to build images of “dynamic abstraction”, as Davis himself describes them.

“Working this way allows me to generate an infinite number of compositions,” Davis explains in an Apple Pro Profile. “I set the boundaries and the rules, but whatever comes out at the end is a surprise. I don’t know what’s going to happen. It could look cool. It could fail. It could be life-changing. There’s always a surprising sense of discovery with this process, because I’m setting up an environment and allowing a scenario to live within it.”

Pawel Kaminski

Communication Dedication: 15 Amazing Graphic Designers

There’s a sense of movement and urgency in every single one of Pawel Kaminski’s designs, something that gives them a vitality that can’t be ignored. Kaminski, of Poland, is quoted by SpeckyBoy as saying “I wouldn’t attribute my design passion to any serious philosophy, I feel this is a good way for artists and designers, you have to be open to most adventures from life. And sometimes a simple lack of words can be easily expressed through illustrations and art, design what you love.”

Chuck Anderson

Communication Dedication: 15 Amazing Graphic Designers

If there’s one element that ties all of Chuck Anderson’s creations together, it’s light. Anderson’s work is bursting with light effects that make his designs crackle with intensity. The prolific young designer has worked with an impressive range of clients including Paste Magazine, ESPN, Reebok, Absolut Vodka and Honda.

Anderson told Abduzeedo, “I don’t think I really have a set source of inspiration. To be honest, I just really love creating things that are striking and fun and vibrant. Things that jump out as far as color goes. You’ll see in my work a lot of times really intense light and color – I really enjoy creating things that feel supernatural and like they came straight out of my imagination.”

Dries Schaballie

Communication Dedication: 15 Amazing Graphic Designers

Graphic design, concept art, art direction, illustration, 3-D modelling – Dries Schaballie does it all. Co-founder and director of Sevenedge Interactive Media, Schaballie has a fascinating portfolio of works that are alternately dreamlike, gritty and playful.

Erik Finsrud/The Norik

On his website, Finsrud notes, “Design to me, is about stripping away arbitrary distractions from the communicated message. Aesthetically I feel a design should be stimulating to the point of curiosity. A lot of my work also falls into illustration, which I feel is more about creating a visceral experience, although I still have a tendency to apply the minimalist principles of design.”

Paul Lee

Communication Dedication: 15 Amazing Graphic Designers

Graphic designer Paul Lee of Los Angeles has worked with Lexus, Acura, Google, Adobe and Sony. His work has a characteristic elegant iciness to it that makes it all the more memorable, and results in a cohesive portfolio that reads almost like one continuous piece of sophisticated design.

Julien de Repentigny

Communication Dedication: 15 Amazing Graphic Designers

Bold, exciting, fresh and most of all, fun: all of these words can be used to describe the work of Montreal graphic designer Julien de Repentigny. Typography takes center stage in three-dimensional designs created from materials like paper, ice and candy. Such unusual physical methods of creating his work might just make him the antithesis of completely computer-reliant graphic designers.

Steampunk Anthology Book

On September 22, 2009, in 03 - Works Of Art, by admin

Steampunk Anthology Book
The term “Steampunk” is applied almost too often these days, with some sub-genres even branching out like dieselpunk, greenpunk, stitchpunk etc. This book, however, aims to preserve the purity of the steampunk mainstream by collecting some excellent stories from around the world. Although none are very recent – most of the included stories are from the 1990s and before – there is a reason for that:

Steampunk Anthology Book
“The goal of the anthology was to collect the iconic first/second wave stories along with some interesting variants, also mostly from ten years ago or earlier,” says co-editor Jeff VanderMeer, “Steampunk II, which we’re working on now, collects reprints from the last ten years”. says Ann Vandemeer, the books editor.

If you are unfamiliar with the genre of Steampunk, have a look at my previous posts HERE.
