Dont Mess With Chinese Water Deer

On October 13, 2009, in 03 - Works Of Art, by admin

Dont Mess With Chinese Water DeerAlthough the deer are less than 2ft tall and weigh a maximum of 31lb, the males have a secret weapon – downward-pointing fangs which can grow more than 3in long.

Dont Mess With Chinese Water DeerLatest victim was Perdita, a six-year-old Jack Russell out for a walk with Georgina Robey, 12, and her tenyearold brother Daniel. Perdita suffered cuts on her back, neck and both sides of her stomach after an encounter with a mystery predator.

It was only when the children’s father Loren took the dog to a vet that they realised she had apparently fallen victim to a serial-attack deer. The same vet had already treated five dogs in a similar condition.

Dont Mess With Chinese Water DeerChinese Water Deer were first introduced into Great Britain in the 1870s and were kept in the London Zoo. In 1896, they were transferred to Woburn Abbey, Bedfordshire, with further additions being imported and added to the stock. In 1929 and 1930, 32 deer were transferred from Woburn to Whipsnade, also in Bedfordshire, and released into the park.
The present introduced population derives from a number of deliberate releases; the majority, however, is descended from escapees. The majority of the wild Chinese Water Deer population still resides in close proximity to Woburn Abbey. It appears that the deer’s strong preference for a particular habitat – tall reed and grass areas in rich alluvial deltas – has restricted its potential to colonize further afield.

Art Shows Thursday 15th October

Art Shows Thursday 15th October
This Saturday 10 October, will see the the Launch event of Joe Ledbetter’s Amalgamation Tour and his first U.K solo show at the London Miles Gallery.

Influenced by classic animation, graphic design, and daily life, Joe Ledbetter’s art is… well… a lot of things. Light-hearted in its approach, he often combines cute and cuddly creatures with unfortunate – albeit humorous – situations. With a lean on the subversive and absurd, these scenarios are all too familiar, questioning our tendency of taking life (and ourselves) too seriously.

Black Rat Press’ next show is a solo exhibition of works by Lucas Price. ‘Jesus Help Me Find My Proper Place’ previews on Thursday 15 October.

Lucas is one of London’s most prolific street artists and a founding member of the Burning Candy Collective. Lucas’ gallery works have an raw urgent feel to them, both angry and intimate, as if he has purged his mind in the process of applying paint to canvas. Often heavily layered and incorporating overlapping text and images they have a striking honesty and freshness to them. For this show Lucas has created an installation which promises to confuse the senses and give a unique insight into his view of the world.

John Simpson’s solo show, ‘Inheritors’ at the Signal Gallery will be his third solo show in London and brings together a refined body of new work from 2009. Much of the work in the show borrows ideas from Native UKn folk law. This is a common theme running through much of Simpson’s work. His concern is to explore the puzzling relationships between man and other animals in order to find subconscious links. ‘I don’t wish to Anthropomorphise these creatures but rather to reflect on man’s position within nature’. It is Simpson’s ability to capture the physical and psychological qualities of these creatures that make the resulting imagery both disquieting and enchanting in equal measure.

The NY Subway System [eBook] | Free Download
Just had a beneficial scan of the eBook about NY’a metro scheme, from its origin in the early twentieth century and damage during the 70′s/80′s until now. Nevertheless, the graff section is rather concise…the book is more about the structure of the subway and the political relation involved with operating a metro system during the 20th century…

Drag Queen Revenge

On October 13, 2009, in 03 - Works Of Art, by admin

I love stories like these; bullies pick fight, then get absolutely nailed!!

Dean Gardener, 19, and Jason Fender, 22, set upon the cross-dressing men shortly after being involved in another street fight in Swansea.

CCTV footage shows the pair approach one of the men – dressed in a pink wig, miniskirt and boob tube – before Gardener throws a punch at him.

But the fight is over in a matter of seconds as the other cage fighter, sporting a wig and a sparkling black dress, floors both the assailants with two lightning-quick punches. (Watch carefully around 1:30 secs, I watched it 3-4 times!)

One of the cross-dressers then casually picks up his bag before the pair strut off, leaving Gardener and Fender lying on the pavement.

The attackers are arrested by police as they stagger down the road. Officers later learned the cross-dressers were actually cage fighters on a fancy dress stag night out.

The Dusky and Kinky Beasts

On October 11, 2009, in 03 - Works Of Art, by admin

The Dusky and Kinky Beasts

One by one, each of the strange little faces with their red button noses and furrowed brows peek out from the strangest of bodies – black and white fish, striped swan, furless hounds and rabbits on bicycles. This bizarre but enchanting cadre of creatures comes from the mind of Cleveland-based artist Scott Radke, who lovingly renders them from clay, fabric and human hair.

The Dusky and Kinky Beasts

Some may call Radke’s sculptures macabre, but however disturbing one may find a gnarled, wart-covered face on a twisted animal body, these creatures also have a playful quirkiness akin to the work of Tim Burton.

The Dusky and Kinky Beasts

Radke’s singular vision permeates his every sculpture, but the artist – who started out making marionettes and expanded into freestanding and wall hanging sculptures – rarely starts out with a specific idea in mind. He prefers to let his creations evolve as he works on them, taking on lives of their own.

The Dusky and Kinky Beasts

“A lot of what I do is like daydreaming,” Radke told Arrested Motion. “If you’re a writer, I imagine you would daydream in stories and words, but mine are more image oriented – shapes, colors, animals, faces, and textures. I just clump them all together and add and subtract along the way until something feels balanced and complete.”

The Dusky and Kinky Beasts

“I could probably come up with what it means or where it came from, But I know that whenever I title something or explain something in writing, when I go back and look at it even just a month or so later, I feel uncomfortable with the way I explained or defined it. It always seems wrong or like I only explained it how I felt on that particular day. I’m just trying to protect myself. It’s better to me for people to come up with their own interpretation.”
