Claudio Ethos hails from Sao Paolo, Brazil and his artistic history starts from very humble beginnings. From painting in the classic Brazilian style of Pichacao, to his current surrealist self, Ethos continues to push the creative envelope. His choice of using just stark black and white in his work brings his work to a more dramatic level, where the ‘distraction’ of colours cannot be employed.
I had arranged to meet Lucas Price the day before his solo show opening at Black Rat Press Gallery. The great thing about this interview was the fact that it didn’t feel like an interview at all. It was more like meeting an old friend to give them support on an artistic endeavour. Sometimes, this can be the best situation for a bit of Q & A, as the answers you often tend to get are a lot more honest and heartfelt.
I love how Lucas is able to produce works that stylistically, are worlds apart from each other, yet all created by the same hand.
Mixing melodic folk with banging electro… 2 completely different genres? Such a combination is likely to have already been somewhere in the recent music scenes where anything goes, but surprisingly, I haven’t heard music like this before. Beautiful acoustic guitar melodies and pleasant vocals on prominent songwriting interwoven with dynamic electro beats… all sounds rather new. James Yuill has established his own unique view of the world, which he describes as the happy marriage between the electronic and the organic worlds.
Sarah Pulvertaft’s work and working processes have evolved over the years. She began at the fashion end of the spectrum, designing two collections of jewellery a year and exhibiting at London Fashion Week and exporting to the US and Japan. She now works also at the other end of the spectrum creating pieces that are exploratory and evolve more gradually.
It’s not just about stuffing dead animals anymore. Lisa Black from New Zealand has taken it to the next level and created amazing cyborg animals with a very steampunk feel.
The only thing left was to follow their outstanding example.
The Spudlight is an underwater fishing lamp concept that has been designed to provide an ultimate solution for the lack of sufficient lighting underwater. The main body of the concept features two bulbs placed in two separate compartments which can rotate 360 degrees vertically. Not only that, the compact main body can rotate to any direction, providing perfect multi-directional lighting which is vital for effective fishing underwater. Both the connectors and the cables have been durably made to sustain the rough underwater environment, while giving maximum functionality for the divers to change the directions of the light.

Whoever designed the pool at the Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel must have been given a blank check and as much real estate as they needed, as the pool complex is practically its own ecosystem. Surrounded by faux mountains and featuring meandering rivers, sandy beaches and hot tubs manned by blackjack dealers, this is a Pool with a capital P! The wet wonderland really shifts into high gear every Sunday from 11AM through 7PM as partygoers flock to the Rehab Pool Party. After a day at Rehab, you’ll probably need… more rehab.

Hail Caesar! Caesars, actually, where the Palace grounds feature a sextet of spectacular pools grouped in a luxuriant oasis known as the Garden of the Gods. Roman emperors would be quite at home in the Garden of the Gods, though they might not know what to make of the iPod docks, wireless Internet and flat screen TVs that make the cabanas true homes away from Rome. Even Nero would give the Garden of the Gods oasis at Caesars Palace Las Vegas a big thumbs up.

No fancy name required; the pool at the Mirage Las Vegas stands on its own. Just be sure you don’t mistake the huge aquarium behind the reception desk for the pool – the nearly one hundred species of fish including sharks, stingrays and pufferfish who populate it may not take kindly to your intrusion. The real pool – pools actually, as several discrete artificial lagoons interconnnect with one another – lies within an elaborately constructed rainforest replete with a cascading waterfall, lush gardens, even a dolphin habitat.

The Flamingo Las Vegas recently renovated their pool and as a Sin City sunbathing center the new Go Pool has few rivals. Sprawling over 15 acres, the pool complex offers guests sheltered grottos, shading palm trees and soothing music from live DJs. The Go Pool happily accommodates the new wave of “European Style” (topless) vacationers as well: the exclusive upper deck is reserved for those who dare to go bare. One of the Go Pool’s favorite features are the fully equipped cabanas providing a host of services and amenities including a television, mini fridge, bottle service, even a personal host to cater to your every whim.

At the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, a climate controlled beach-side casino helps keep gamblers cool when the chips are down but that’s only one part of what the Mandalay Bay Beach complex offers. A full 11 acres of pools and lagoons containing 1.6 million gallons of water and tons of real beach sand combine to create a “beach environment” served by over 100 rental cabanas, decadent daybeds and even full fledged villas. Among the various types of pools in the complex is a huge wave pool big enough to accommodate body-boarders.

The pool at the Paris Las Vegas Hotel lies in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower and the huge hot air balloon out front – maybe not the best sun-worshippers could hope for but an outstanding view in its own right. Roughly circular and occupying a full 2 acres of space, the pool offers spacious surroundings and scads of lounge chairs from which to take in the incongruous sight of Paris rising from the desert sands. One wonders what actual French tourists think of the setting.

One interesting feature of the complex is the Wet Republic which features 2 saltwater pools and an outdoor lounge/bar. Grand indeed! For those who prefer to take Las Vegas on their own terms – and slip away to peace and quiet when they choose – The Signature towers provide guests with the very best service in a comfortable condo-style atmosphere.

The Tropicana was the first Las Vegas hotel to offer in-pool gambling and this classy innovator is a favorite stop for many Vegas veterans. The Trop’ is also a leader in casino pool design and most of the Strip’s larger hotels have copied its verdant rainforest themed pool complex and its many fountains, waterfalls and grottos. Knowing the history of the Tropicana and its constant drive to be on the leading edge of Las Vegas pool design, it will be interesting to see what the owners have in store for April of 2010, when the currently closed and under construction pool complex is revealed !

One of the more luxurious Las Vegas hotels – and that’s saying something – The Palms features a number of pool options to thrill the most jaded of travelers. The sixth floor pool just outside Simon’s Restaurant & Lounge offers a serene and peaceful pool getaway while at the upper end, the $40,000 per night Hugh Hefner Sky Villa atop the Tower of Palms Casino Resort features an indoor pool with an attached outdoor Jacuzzi that overlooks the Las Vegas Strip.

One of Las Vegas’ most elegant hotels and famed for its fantastic fountains, the Bellagio offers swim fans a five-fold treat with a quintet of luxurious pools. Those with “snow white syndrome” need not fear: each pool is maintained at a slightly different water temperature. The pools at the Bellagio also evoke different moods and cultures. Take the Tuscan Villa Pool at above top; it features lush greenery, integral fountains and even misting fans to add, er, mystery.

Perhaps the most amazing thing about these heavenly pools is the fact that they, and the city of Las Vegas, are situated in the midst of a searingly hot and dry desert. Where are the hotels finding the tens of millions of gallons of water needed to keep these symbols of conspicuous consumption afloat? Certainly these are thoughts worth considering… as one orders up another pina colada from the poolside bar.

In a world of Photoshop and special effects, artistic craft wrought by hand is getting harder to come by. But Liu Bolin doesn’t need any fancy technology to produce the jaw-dropping illusion of invisibility – his urban camouflage photography is all paint and pure talent.
The Beijing-based artist spends hours studying his chosen locations and painting himself and other subjects, while carefully taking perspective and texture into account for spectacular results that render them almost invisible.
But Liu’s work is more than just a cool-looking feat of trompe l’oeil. In the past, works depicting anti-government imagery, including some in which his Chinese subjects are in the grips of police officers, have resulted in the Chinese government shutting down his art studio.
“In my photography, historical statues, costumes and architecture become symbols of that which confines us,” Liu says. “I am expressing the desire to break through these structures. I portray subjects that seem to disappear into these structures and become transparent. The subject is released from social constructs and he is free.”
“Living in the red hot China, I feel that I am not in control of my own life. However, I have an indescribable burning desire inside of me. Art is a weapon that helps us untangle the chaos in our lives. I hope that my artworks can calm people down during this period of constant change, but at the same time, inspire people to re-evaluate our environment and reconsider the problems arising in our society. In this transition period, I can hear the voice of Hamlet whispering, “for in the sleep of death, what dreams may come.”

Today I was supposed to be lookng for an xmas present for the family and ended up buying myself two prints by artist, Dan Hillier. He blends old cross-hatched scientific diagrams with a touch of the occult & mysticism. I actually had a tough time trying to decide which prints to go for as he had quite a few I really liked.
